ENVIRONMENT : Landscape

The power outputs from most run-of-river hydro schemes can be carried by the common three-wire overhead line widely used for local distribution. These usually operate at voltages in the range 10-38kV. It is often possible to connect schemes directly into these lines. Since this infrastructure is usually already in place, environmental impact need not be considered.

Waterfalls are regarded as aesthetic features and often attract tourists. It must therefore be ensured that extraction does not appreciably diminish the visual impact of a waterfall (see figures).
